I’m Amy, a student passionate about UX/UI design in Ann Arbor, MI. I have a history of solid work ethic, exploring creative solutions to enhance digital experiences and providing a space for Latinidad to transcend in design spaces. My objective is to utilize storytelling in my design process and to find unique ways to improve digital experiences for users.

I am a tenacious problem solver and enjoy tackling complex business problems through user-friendly design with customers. Ultimately, I utilize the benefits of UX design to research, expand and develop businesses.

My Career So far...

  • I recently joined the University of Michigan community, in the Fall of 2022. I initially started my educational journey at Michigan State University, where I was pursing a nursing degree. However, during a honors anatomy class for pre-health students, I couldn't help but think about my favorite artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The images and illustrations in class reminded me of his art which is characterized by brilliant utilization of human anatomy. Basquiat was seven years old when he was hit by a car while playing outside his home, he was rushed to the hospital and during this time his mother gave him a copy of "Gray's Anatomy" which sparked his lifelong interest in the structures and functions of the human body. This led him to develop a visual language that used human anatomy to comment on power, race, identity, and vulnerability. I shortly realized I wanted to follow in his steps and pursue something I loved. At Michigan State University I continued to take classes in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Human Anatomy and English Literature. I explored all possible careers my first few years of college and landed on applying to the University of Michigan.

    I found out about the School of Information when I was browsing on LinkedIn as I do I stumbled across a BSI student, I immediately gravitated towards a Bachelors in Information Sciences. It was my big aha moment, after feeling so lost for so long I found an interdisciplinary major that combined all of my interests with a modern, ethical and impactful approach. Also I had exposure to data science and informatics earlier in high school. Given my experiences at Girls Who Code at the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics I learned so much and realized I loved python, design and health informatics. It really felt like a full circle moment, I vividly remember running to living room and dancing because I finally found a program I was passionate about. Since that day, around a year ago today I have moved schools, changed majors and followed my passions of pursuing a career in design, technology, and entrepreneurship. Careers I'm interested in include: product design, product management, and interaction design with an emphasis on health informatics and research.

    I have added creative inspiration to my site as I would not be where I am today without inspiration and guidance from Jean-Michel Basquiat. He continues to inspire my goals as an activist, advocate, and overall muse to my career. I was scared to do a flip-flop and change my major and interests, and I wasn't sure if it was right as it was the opposite of the traditionally expected doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Upon my predicament, I told myself I needed a sign it was the right path. A few months later, my acceptance to the competitive Latinx Student Leadership Summit at Google further launched my hopes of entering and contributing to the tech world. As I work towards my developing career goals, I aspire to support students in the same position I was in. The representation of Latinx employees is low in the tech field, and women are highly underrepresented. I want to be a positive source of change, I aim to empower and assist individuals in my position to recognize their ability to shape their own lives.
